The eight scientific expedition to the Gaujene district in 1954. The collection represents a steep decline of interest in Soviet folklore. While it was still collected, less and less was included in the archive as proper units afterwards. Overall, 17 participants of the expedition collected folklore, visiting 205 informants and gaining more than 6500 units of new material, including 310 melodies. However, Soviet folklore is represented by less than 200 units, and half of those are revolutionary songs of 1905. The expedition was the part of a ‘composite Baltic anthropologic-ethnographic expedition by the Institute of Ethnography at the USSR Academy of Science’.

The collection includes hundreds of units of fisherman folklore collected in other areas later that year. Prominent parts of the collection are the documentation of Midsummer celebrations as well as multiple testimonials about well-known writers, poets, actors and other cultural celebrities of past.
