The collection is made up of choreographer Harijs Sūna’s folk choreography questionnaires and music teacher Voldemars Kažoks’ music materials from Gārsene parish. The manuscript included 444 questionnaires, but only 370 are currently available as the rest have been lost. 2895 folklore items have been identified, including not only dances, singing games, and other games, but also choreographic drawings, customs, beliefs, descriptions of holidays and daily life, local place names and personal names, children’s songs, folk songs and popular songs, melodies, as well H. Sūna’s theories and narrations. Five questionnaires were completed in Russian.

The materials were recorded between 1965 and 1994, but it is also possible to find the first half of the 20^th century, as some of the questionnaires were filled out at the end of the 19^th century. They were filled out by the students of Harijs Sūna and by elderly people interviewed by the students. The materials were periodically submitted to the LFK archive. Upon receiving the questionnaires, Harijs Sūna recorded them in the archives because he was a choreography researcher for LFK at the time.

At the beginning of the collection H. Sūna writes: “In training my students to record choreographic processes, I gave them a homework assignment to write ‘Folk Choreography Notes’ according to the attached form No. 1.” The questionnaires were a way of teaching students to record choreography and the context of its execution. In later years, students completed questionnaires as a part of their exams, which Sūna supervised, so Sūna’s comments can be found on some of the materials.

Since Sūna participated in ALF expeditions, such questionnaires were also used there.

The information provided in the questionnaires vividly reflects the era and the variability of its dances. The questionnaires provide information about events and traditions from the respondent’s childhood, as well as those practiced at the time of completion. It is also possible to identify both traditional dances and folk dances performed on stage. The questionnaires provide information about events in the countryside and in the major cities throughout Latvia, including in Abrene.
