LFK collection [1168] is literary researcher, folklorist, and linguist Jānis Valdemārs Bičolis (1927-1931) folklore collection. Jānis V. Bičolis (b. 1904 in Krustpils Parish, Latvia – d. 1982 in Montclaire, USA) submitted his folklore collection in 1930 and 1931 in four notebooks containing 2025 folklore items. Recorded mainly in Sēlija – Jekabpils Birži from his mother Dārta, father Pēters, grandfather Janis Lapiņš, godfather Andrejs Kļaviņš, and two more folk narrators — Dārta Zadinēna and Grieta Stagare. The special value of the Bičolis collection is its connection to the collector’s family in two generations and to his birthplace, whichhe knows well. The proverbs and sayings recorded from his father and godfather provide an excellent depiction of the atmosphere of Birži, as do the stories, legends and tales he recorded from his father and grandfather—masters of the fairy tale. From his mother Bičolis received folk songs and vivid folk riddles. The professional representation of the Zemgale Selijan dialect in the phonetic transcriptions of these recorded examples of folklore are a valuable reference for linguists.

Bičolis also obtained diverse folklore materials from folk narrators in the Jelgava area. He recorded folk beliefs and daily weather observations from Anlīze Ābelīte, and folk medicine and spells from mother Grandovska. He also has an interesting and abundant collection of 322 singing games from Mežmuiža in Jelgava. Folk songs, mainly about courtship and marriage, were recorded in Rīga from folk narrator Anna Stella from Rucava and Ede Baumane from Talsi.
